Aluminum Picket Railings
Strength, Style & Versatility
The Go-To Railing for Residential and Commercial Decks
Aluminum picket railing is the most popular choice for decks, porches, balconies, and stairways across North America — and for good reason. It combines the classic vertical-picket look with the strength and longevity of powder-coated aluminum, delivering a clean, secure barrier that holds up for decades with virtually no maintenance.
Whether you’re a homeowner replacing aging wood railings, a contractor outfitting a new build, or a property manager looking for a durable solution across multiple units, aluminum picket railing fits the job. It meets Canadian and US building code requirements out of the box, comes in a wide range of heights and colors, and installs cleanly on both surface-mount and fascia-mount applications.
Unlike wood, it won’t rot, warp, or splinter. Unlike vinyl, it won’t yellow, crack in cold weather, or warp in heat. And unlike steel, it won’t rust — even in coastal or harsh Canadian climates. For a deeper look at how aluminum compares to other materials, see our Aluminum vs. Steel, Wood or Vinyl comparison.
The Durability of Aluminum
Industry-leading powder coating line
We combine the durability of aluminum and ultra-durable powder coated finishes from our own industry-leading powder coating line. This outstanding combination gives you the assurance of structural integrity while drastically reducing long term maintenance and repair costs.
All of our components are precision fabricated and go through a stringent, multi-level quality assurance program to ensure we meet the highest standards expected from today’s consumer.

Exceeds National Building Codes
Our patent-pending designs are engineered to meet current Canadian and US residential building codes (National Building Code of Canada 2015 and International Residential Codes 2015).

Heights, Spacing & Building Code
Innovative Aluminum picket railings are available in 36-inch and 42-inch heights, with custom heights available for specialty applications. Which height you need depends on your local building code and the elevation of your deck above grade:
- 36 inches (900 mm) — standard for most residential decks up to approximately 6 feet above ground in Canada, and 30 inches or more above grade in the US
- 42 inches (1,070 mm) — required for elevated decks, multi-family buildings, and commercial applications in most jurisdictions
Picket spacing on all Innovative systems meets the universal 4-inch (100 mm) rule — no opening large enough for a small child to pass through. Because our pickets are precision-welded at the factory, this spacing is built into the product and doesn’t rely on field measurement.
Our picket railings also satisfy climbability requirements in all Canadian provinces and US states, since vertical pickets do not create footholds. For a full breakdown of railing code requirements across BC, Canada, and the US, see our Deck Railing Building Code Requirements guide.
Why Choose Aluminum Picket Over Other Materials?
Aluminum vs. Wood: Wood railings need staining or painting every two to three years, and even with proper care, they eventually rot, crack, and splinter. Aluminum doesn’t. It holds its shape, color, and structural integrity through every season without chemical treatments or ongoing labor.
Aluminum vs. Vinyl: Vinyl can shrink in cold and warp in heat, and over time it fades and becomes brittle under UV exposure. Vinyl also presents a fire hazard and releases toxic gases when burned. Aluminum railings remain dimensionally stable across extreme temperature swings and are inherently non-combustible.
Aluminum vs. Steel: Steel is roughly three times heavier than aluminum and requires repainting every few years to prevent rust. Aluminum won’t rust, is lighter to handle and ship, and can be cut on-site with a standard miter saw — no welders or grinders needed.

Low Maintenance, Long Life
Aluminum picket railing is one of the lowest-maintenance options you can install. An occasional rinse with water and a wipe-down with mild soap is all it takes to keep the powder-coated finish looking new. There’s no painting, staining, sanding, or chemical treatment — ever.
In coastal areas or regions with heavy snowfall and de-icing salt, we recommend rinsing the railing every three to four months to prevent buildup. Beyond that, aluminum’s natural corrosion resistance and our AAMA 2604 powder coat do the work for you. For detailed care instructions, see our Railing Care & Cleaning guide.
All Innovative Aluminum picket systems are backed by a 20-year structural warranty and a 10-year finish warranty — giving you long-term confidence that the railing you install today will perform for years to come.
Available Finishes
Innovative’s welded aluminum picket railings are available in numerous durable, long-wearing finishes. A wide variety of custom colors are also available. See Powder Coating / Finishes for complete information on our advanced powder coating process.
